Like any other medical condition, Insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder, manifests itself in a certain number of symptoms. Here is a list of the most common symptoms of insomnia.

1-    Having problem falling asleep, in that it takes you a long time, even hours, to fall asleep.
2-    Waking up during the night, without being able to quickly fall asleep again
3-    Waking up too early in the morning, much before you actually need to wake up.

But it is important to remember that it is not only the amount of sleep that matters, but rather the feeling during the morning following such a restless night. Indeed, studies which examined the immediate symptoms of insomnia found that insomniacs have consistently reported feelings such as fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, daytime tiredness, impaired mood and social functioning, all occurring on the day following a night with insufficient sleep.

Insomniacs also think they are too easily upset, and that they suffer from memory problems. This notion has a scientific basis: While two researchers found that insomniacs suffer from impaired short term memory, one scientist found out that insomnia might also lead to long term memory loss. If this isn’t enough, a large proportion of people suffering from insomnia even complain of having trouble thinking and exercising judgment.

With all the above listed symptoms of insomnia, it is no wonder that people who wake up from a restless night should be extra careful while operating machinery or driving, as they are more prone to accidents than normal sleepers.
It is therefore advisable that people who find they have the above listed symptoms to consult with their doctor with no delay. There are proven and effective ways to handle and cure insomnia, and there is no need to put up with the symptoms of insomnia at such a dear cost.
