Chronic insomnia is a widespread medical condition. Many researches point to the fact that it is actually the most common sleep related medical condition that health practitioners confront. In simple terms, chronic insomnia is the inability to maintain good quality sleep that also has adverse affects on the insomniac daytime functions.

The latest chronic insomnia theory basically suggests that chronic insomnia is developed when people have a tendency to be worried or anxious, followed by a certain event that triggers the insomnia (say, being laid off from work) , and perpetuated by the person’s constant struggle to getting a good night sleep.

It is ironic that sleep comes easily to those who don’t chase after it. In the case of people who suffer from chronic insomnia, they do exactly the opposite: go to bed earlier then usual in an attempt to get more sleep, stay longer in bed to try and catch just a little bit more of sleep, are obsessed with having the bedroom extra -dark and quite, constantly check the clock to see whether they’ve slept, etc. So it is exactly this kind of behavior of chasing after sleep that chases the sleep away!

How could you break the cycle of chronic insomnia?

The best way is of course, seeing a health professional, and seeking his help. However, there is some advice you can start using straight away, even until you see the doctor. The best thing is to go to sleep and wake up at regular, fixed hours, 7 days a week. Get rid of the clock, so that you don’t constantly check yourself for sleeping. Do not force yourself to stay in bed in an attempt to get more sleep. If you feel that some 20 minutes or so have passed, and you still can not fall asleep, simply get out of bed. Go to another room, and do some “brainless” activity, like reading a magazine, or listening to quite music. When you feel sleepy, go back to bed. During the day, avoid coffee and cigarettes, and avoid napping, so that you will be tired when your bed time comes.

You might also use some natural insomnia remedies, available on pharmacies.

If you find that you can not deal with your chronic insomnia alone, don’t hesitate about seeing a health practitioner as soon as possible. There are proven methods of ensuring you will get the sleep you need, and the best method even doesn’t involve taking sleeping pills.
